A Skinnerbox, so I am told, is a box out of which jumps a little devil (or so) when opened, something that is meant to scare you.
Skinnerbox, that’s also two gentlemen, one of them immigrated from a far away country and both living in Berlin now. In their boxes there’s no devil (although the church has tought us all that the devil is everywhere, right ?), but there are grandpa’s old synths, funnily and heavily beeping and bumping beats and basses, joy and fun as in Godzilla’s playroom, all of this tight and straight and boomy.
An absolute highlight is the appearance of mister RQM, grandmaster of rimes (“the Tape”), feeling at ease with these 2/4 beats like Fidel Castro behind the lectern.
And then comes Mister Humantronic, his remix, finest tech that will wake up the beast even where no beast was ever before.
A record to love and to pamper !

CHRONIQUE PAR INTERSLICE (JUIN 2008)
Neopren Records est un label suisse que nous avions découvert au début de cette année avec « Between us » de Humantronic. La 16ème sortie nous fait découvrir Skinnerbox, un duo berlinois qui va très certainement faire parler de lui dans les mois à venir. « Sonar EP » nous transporte très vite sur un festival barcelonais du même nom… Mais aussi vers des ambiances sous-marines faites d’ondes, d’échos : en outre une belle métaphore pour décrire la minimale. Le track « sonar » est un véritable régal, agrémenté d’un vocal qui rappelle étrangement le chanteur de Faithless, une mélodie qui part complètement en vrille et s’hystérisant dans la continuité et des effets dubby à vous donner la chair de poule ! Le remix de Humantronic s’évade vers la galaxie pumping, martelant la tête avec une basse agressive juste ce qu’il faut pour en apprécier la saveur et en redemander. « Alexis Journey to Nirvana » est beaucoup plus mental, à écouter confortablement assis sur son canapé avant ou en retour de soirée. Neopren nous offre une fois de plus une minimale de grande qualité qui plaira à tout bon danseur qui se respecte.
